The Aeron Valley is situated in the Welsh county of Ceredigion in West Wales. It stretches from Aberaeron on the Cardigan Bay coast through to Llangeitho. Settlements along the valley include Llyswen, Dolgwartheg, Llanerchaeron, Ciliau Aeron, Newbridge, Ystrad Aeron, Brynog, Felin Fach, Tal-sarn, Llundain-fach, Abermeurig, Dolau Aeron, Capel Betws Lleucu and Llangeitho. The broad valley of the Afon Aeron is bounded by low hills with no significant mountains to define the valley. The beauty of the Vale of Aeron is not in doubt and the celebrated Welsh poet Dylan Thomas and his wife Caitlin lived here in the 1940s. Indeed, they called the Aeron valley "the most precious place in the world" and gave its name to their daughter Aeronwy. They lived in a secluded mansion called Plas Gelli, on the outskirts of Talsarn. | Walk in the footsteps of Dylan and follow the Dylan Thomas Trail alongside the river from Talsarn to Aberaeron, a pleasant walk rich in wildlife including kingfishers, herons, and, who knows, you might be fortunate to spot the otters and sea trout. | A 4km cycle route winds its way through the valley linking Aberaeron with the National Trust property at Llanerchaeron. The route follows the old railway line alongside the river Aeron with short sections of quiet country roads at each end, and, although designated a cycle trail, it is also a delightful stroll for walkers. Apart from a moderate uphill section at the Aberaeron end the route is generally flat. | Llanerchaeron itself is a rare example of an 18th-century Welsh minor gentry estate that has survived virtually unaltered. The villa, designed in the 1790s, is the most complete example of the early work of John Nash. It has its own service courtyard with dairy, laundry, brewery and salting house, and walled kitchen gardens (with all its produce for sale when in season). |The pleasure grounds and ornamental lake and parkland provide peaceful walks. The Home Farm complex has an impressive range of traditional, atmospheric outbuildings and is a working organic farm with Welsh Black cattle, Llanwenog sheep and rare Welsh pigs.
