King Arthur's Stone is to be found in St Peter's Square, Ruthin, North Wales. It is said that on this stone the legendary King Arthur beheaded Huail, brother of Gildas the historian, his rival in love and war. It would not be wise to dismiss these ancient tales of violence too lightly, for as recently as 12 August 1679 the Franciscan Friar Charles Mahoney was executed in St Peter's Square by being hung from the gibbet that projects from the eaves of the Old Court House across the square.
