Neath Rugby Football Club can trace its origins back to 1871/72 when the first recorded match took place against Swansea. From the beginning, games were played at The Gnoll, now with a 7,500 capacity, which was also used for cricket so other grounds were used in the Town, most notably the Bird-in-Hand Field where Neath’s Civic Centre is now situated.| The colour of their strip led to Neath becoming known as “The Mourners” or the “Welsh All Blacks.” Having been formed in 1871, Neath Rugby Football Club is the oldest rugby team in Wales.
