Sarn Helen is a Roman Road that winds its way across the Welsh countryside from Caerhun in the Conwy Valley to Carmarthen in South West Wales. Sarn Helen is named after Elen the daughter of the Romano-British ruler Octavius and the wife of Macsen or Magnus Maximus, the Roman Emperor in Britain. Our picture shows Sarn Helen close to the abandoned village of Rhiwddolion in the Gwydyr Forest, Conwy County, North Wales. From here the road cuts across the Lledr Valley and through Cwm Penamnen close to Dolwyddelan before climbing out of the valley and passing Llan Ffestiniog on its way toward Mid Wales.
