The 500yr old cottage is the birthplace of Sir John Barrow, 1764-1848, one of Ulverston's best known sons. He is known as a traveller, writer, secretary to the Admiralty, said to be the best since Pepys, reformed the Royal Navy and exiled Napoleon to the lonely island of St Helena. Sir John also wrote the classic report 'Mutiny of the Bounty' and founded the Royal Geographical Society.
