Promenade Colwyn Bay Conwy_County Wales
Porth Eirias is a waterfront development on the
promenade in Colwyn Bay, North Wales. Originally designed as part of the
Colwyn Bay flood prevention scheme, Porth Eirias is to be a hub, or
watersports hotspot, in the Bay of Colwyn.

The Rhos Harbour end of the Bay of Colwyn has traditionally been the
centre for watersports including fishing trips and mooring of pleasure
boats, while the Eirias slipway has been used more or less exclusively
by the Jet Ski community.

With the arrival of the Porth Eirias Watersports Centre this is set to
change and sailing boats and sea kayaks will be encouraged at the new
centre. No doubt the ever growing numbers of SUP's, stand up paddlers
(on surfboards) will also be encouraged and the new centre will also
house changing rooms, an educational centre, cafe and bistro.
The new watersports centre has, however, caused some
controversy around the Bay of Colwyn. The council is proposing to
demolish the Rhos Point complex and redevelop the site without the
popular fishing tackle / boat trips / kayak hire and souvenir shops that
occupy the building at present, and moving the watersports centre to
Porth Eirias.

A petition has been drawn up to protest at the
proposals and the Conwy County officials are holding an open shop in
Rhos on Sea on Wednesday 14th March 2012 to explain the new plans.

Personally I believe the Bay of Colwyn is big enough for two watersports
centres and indeed rather than them being in competition with one
another I say they would complement each other.
