Holywell Flintshire Wales
St Winefride's Church is located on a steep hillside
below the small town of Holywell, North Wales. The church is one of a
number of North East Wales churches known as "Stanley Churches" after
Lord Stanley and his wife Margaret Beaufort who were benefactors to the
churches following the accession of Henry Tudor (Margaret's son)to the
throne of England. The churches are all of similar late 15th Century
"perpendicular" style, which is uncommon to most of North Wales. They
have a pleasant yellow sandstone and are usually populated with
interesting grotesques, gargoyles, and multiple carvings of strange
animals running around the string course or frieze.
