Whittington Castle, Castles and Forts Whittington, Shropshire - England where to go, what to see and where to stay in Wales

Castle Street Whittington Shropshire England
Welcome to Whittington Castle near Oswestry in Shropshire England. The strikingly picturesque and romantic ruins are steeped in much history, tales of bitter border warfare, romance and legend. A small rural community in North Shropshire, England has acquired a 99 year lease to manage the Castle that sits in the centre of its village. The Trust is delighted to announce that a project to repair and restore Whittington Castle has just been completed with the assistance of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. We believe ours is the only Castle in the UK which is owned and run by a local community. The existing Castle is set in about 12 acres of ground and is the remains of a Norman home. We welcome visitors all year and hope that you enjoy your visit to our Castle. Guided Tours and Talks: Whittington Castle is available for Groups to visit at any time. Group tours and talks can be arranged or why not book a Tour/talk and Fun Quiz trail and buffet. The visit starts with a tour and short talk from Mistress Ellis, in medieval costume. The group is then split into teams, such as Castle servants, Castle Guards, Travelling Fools, My Lady and her guests. Each team is sent to find the answers to questions which include finding objects belonging to the characters they portray. Watch out for a few surprises along the way! Once completed the groups assemble and tell everyone who they are and what they have had to do (this usually proves quite entertaining!). A prize for the best team and then a buffet follows. Tearoom: Why not have a cup of tea or piece of cake in the Castle Tearoom? Freshly prepared sandwiches, homemade soups, locally produced ice cream. Tearoom Manager Michaela Route will be happy to cater for meetings, birthday parties, functions and civil ceremonies. Telephone her on 01691 662500. Second-hand Bookshop and Gift Area: Pick up a bargain at the Castle or a souvenir to take back home. A good selection of gifts as well as themed items suitable for children including swords and helmets for prospective Knights or Damsel headresses and purses for the ladies! Donations of second hand books are always welcome - all proceeds help to maintain this important historic monument. PLEASE NOTE ONLY CASH OR CHEQUES TAKEN IN SHOP AND TEAROOM - NO CARDS. Wildlife and Walks: Duck Feeding- Many people come to Whittington Castle to feed the Ducks and watch our family of Swans. We provide duck food for people to purchase and the ducks are extremely tame. Dogs- Dogs are allowed into the grounds of the Castle but we do ask that they are kept on a lead and kept under control as this is a site for wildlife. Family Walks- There are many suitable family walks around the grounds of the castle or following the public footpath through the village and across the neighbouring field passing a play area.
