This Greater Black-Backed Gull was photographed on Colwyn Bay beach, in Conwy County, North Wales. Once quite a rare visitor to the beach today (2010) pairs of Great Black-Backed Gulls are regular visitors and seem to stay all year round. They rule the roost, so to speak, from Rhos Point to the Old Colwyn end of the beach, but as yet I have not seen them taking part in the popular winter sport of "mussel-bombing" where the seagulls and crows drop mussels onto the promenade with the intention of either (a) hitting me on the head, or (b) breaking open the mussel shell.
