Windermere Cumbria...Windermere in England
England > Cumbria >  Windermere
Windermere sits on the banks of Lake Windermere in the Lake District, Cumbria, England. Originally known as Birthwaite, is one of the most popular areas of the Lake District National Park. The town changed its name in the late 1800s with the arrival of the railway station, but it has done nothing to deter the tourists who flock here throughout the year. Although Windermere has now merged with its neighbour Bowness-on-Windermere, it still has a separate town centre, complete with small shops and quaint cafes.
Many walks can be taken from Windermere to other areas of the Lake District. The Orrest Head trail is a circular route from the railway station and down past the A591, taking in views of Windermere Lake and the beautiful backdrop of the Lake District mountains. Millerground and Adeilaide Hill trail begins at the car park on Rayrigg Road and includes walks along the shore, a climb to see Millground Cottage and some spectacular waterfalls. For those who want to make a day of it, there is the Post Knott and Brantfell trail, starting from the promenade at Bowness. The walk incorporates views of Windermere Lake, ancient cairns and rural countryside. ....
