The coastal village of Kenfig lies on the south western corner of Wales, in the county of Bridgend. The majority of Kenfig is a large area of sand dunes which has been made a Nature Reserve. The reserve is one of the largest active sand dune systems in the whole of Europe, and is home to an array of wildlife. A boardwalk leads to the 70-acre freshwater pool, where visitors can stop and watch the birds in one of the many hides.
The remains of Kenfig Castle are also worth a visit if you have an interest in history. A 12th century fortification, the castle was established by Robert, earl of Gloucester and was used as an administrative centre. In the 12th and 13th centuries Kenfig castle was often invaded by the Welsh, but from the 13th century onwards it was sadly engulfed by the Kenfig sand dunes and began to decay.
