Egremont
Egremont is a quaint little town situated near Whitehaven in Cumbria, North West England. Lying only 2 miles from the border of the Lake District National Park, both Ennerdale Water and Buttermere lake are within easy reach and Calderbridge, Kinniside and St Bridget Buckermet are all close by.
In 2004, Egremont castle became the first Green Heritage Site in Cumbria. The Normans decided to build a castle at Egremont soon after conquering Britain. However, it would not be built for another 150 years, when between 1130 and 1140, William de Meschines went to work constructing the present fortification. Upon his death it passed into the hands of his son Ranulph de Meschines. Following his death there was no male heir and so the castle was given to his sister Alice. After her son with William Fitzduncan died early, Egremont castle was given to their daughters Annabel, Cecily and Alice. Afterwards it became the property of Richard de Lucy, son of Annabel.....
