The Abertillery and District Museum is run by the volunteers of Abertillery and District Museum Society, which was founded at an inaugural meeting, held in Carmel Chapel Schoolroom on 30th September 1964. Its membership is open to anyone who accepts the rules of the Society, and on payment of an annual subscription fee. The aim of the Society is to set up and maintain a museum in Abertillery, to hold monthly talks, and to promote history in the area. The Abertillery and District Museum originally opened on the 13th of January 1972 on the ground-floor of Abertillery library. This was the Museum home until August 1996. The Museum was then temporarily put into store in the Metropole Building. During this period the Society began an intensive fundraising campaign, seeking funds for a new Museum building. On the 21st June 2001 a new Museum was opened on the ground floor of the Old Market Hall in the Metropole Building by our President Sir Richard Handbury Tenison and Councillor Nigel Daniels. A grant was obtained from the Heritage Lottery Fund for new cases, displays, and a children's education area in 2006. A refurbished and a very much improved Museum re-opened in July 2007. Opening Times: Tuesday to Thursday, 10.00 am-1.00 pm and 2.00 pm-4.00 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 10.00 am - 1.00 pm. Sunday and Monday, Closed.....
