Fforest Fawr [Welsh for Great Forest] is a mountain landscape within the Brecon Beacons National Park in Powys Mid Wales. Close to Fforest Fawr you will find fantastic waterfalls, amazing caves and some of the highest mountains in southern Britain. It extends from the edge of the Black Mountain in the west [a small mountain range, not to be confused with the Black Mountains in the east of the National Park], to the A470 Brecon to Merthyr Tydfil road and the Central Beacons in the east. The traditional area known as Fforest Fawr includes the peaks of Fan Fawr 734m, Fan Frynych 628m, Fan Llia 631m, Fan Nedd 663m, Fan Gyhirych 725m, Fan Bwlch Chwyth 603m, Cefn Cul 562m, Fan Hir 761m, and Fan Brycheiniog 802m. The lakes of Llyn y Fan Fach and Llyn y Fan Fawr are to the west and the Ystradfellte reservoir and Beacons reservoir to the east. Since October 2005 it has formed the core of the Fforest Fawr Geopark, the first Geopark in Wales and one of several areas in the UK designated for their outstanding geological heritage.
