Statue of Mars Cardiff Castle in Wales
Cardiff Castle, Cardiff, City of Cardiff, Wales,
The statue of Mars is located on the Clock Tower, Cardiff Castle, Wales. The statue of Mars is one of seven nine-foot high statues that have guarded the tower since it was built between 1869 and 1873. The statues were carved in stone by the London sculptor, Thomas Nicholls. The 132ft clock tower was the first building to be constructed at Cardiff Castle by William Burges the designer of both the Victorian Castle and its elaborate Gothic Revival interiors. The statues include Mars, the Roman god of war, Jupiter, Sol, Luna, Saturn, Venus and Mercury, the messenger of the Gods. The statues have recently been repainted in their original vivid colours, and much of the work has been restored in gold leaf. ....
