After a two year break the music festival Sesiwn Fawr is returning to Dolgellau this year 2011. Tickets are already on sale from 01341 421800. Tickets are limited with just 500 people being allowed in the marquee.

According to the Daily Post :

“Festival spokeswoman Bethan Ruth said Sesiwn Fawr will last for a week with the emphasis on Welsh folk music.

Despite the new direction the festival, which begins on July 15, kicks off with a rock gig headlined by Yr Ods, the BBC RAP band of the year and other bands.

Bethan said: “We’ve managed to get the biggest names in the rock scene in Wales and I’m sure we’ll have a great night.”

On Saturday a number of Wales’ finest folk artists will take part in a gig at a specially erected marquee. Headlining, in what will be their first appearance in Dolgellau, will be Mynediad am Ddim.

“For various reasons we failed to get Mynediad am Ddim to appear in Sesiwn Fawr until this year, they are one of the leading folk groups in Wales, their contribution over the years has been huge and it’s nice to welcome them to Dolgellau,” added Bethan.

Other major Welsh folk groups appearing at Dolgellau are Calan and Cowbois Rhos Botwnnog. Also appearing in Sesiwn Fawr on the Saturday night are rock folk band Section D and jazz violin virtuoso Billy Thompson and his band from Bala.

Following the opening weekend a number of more local events in nature will be held at different locations in and around Dolgellau leading to the final weekend session on July 23.

Based on two local legends it will be a day of traditional dancing. A team representing of the Green Man of Llyn Gwernan and another team representing the Serpent of Coed y Moch will march towards the centre of Dolgellau where one of the teams will be crowned champions for the year. Eldon Square will be closed to traffic and the activities end with a twmpath dawns (barn dance) in the square with Bandarall.
