The Spaceguard Centre, Educational Experiences Knighton, Powys - Wales where to go, what to see and where to stay in Wales

Llanshay Lane Knighton Powys Wales
The Spaceguard Centre is the only organisation in the UK addressing the hazard of Near Earth Objects. NEOs are asteroids and comets that come close to, and sometimes collide with the Earth. Such impacts can have devastating effects – they have in the past and will in the future unless we use available technologies to prevent them. The aim of Spaceguard UK is to develop and maintain a world-class facility for astronomical research and science education, with a specific emphasis on the Spaceguard project. We want to bring the wonders of the universe to everyone in a fun and understandable way. The Spaceguard Centre runs regular tours. Come and see our facilities, hear about Spaceguard and learn something about the wonders of astronomy. During your visit you will be able to experience the planetarium as well as see the facilities that we have at our disposal such as the 13" refractor in an environmentally sealed dome. Your tour will cover topics such as the origin of the Solar System, planet formation, the hazard posed by near Earth objects and the action that can be taken to neutralise this threat. The tour will be conducted by NEO expert Jay Tate, and there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions. Open Wednesday to Sunday, and Bank Holidays. 1 May to 31 October - 10:30am, 2pm and 4pm. 1 November to 30 April - 2pm and 4pm.
