Saint Peris, to whom the church is dedicated, is said to have settled and died in the valley. And close to the church is the Holy Well or Sacred Spring known as Ffynnon y Sant from which Peris is supposed to have drunk each day.
There are many legends associated with the old well and in days gone by crowds would flock here to secure relief from their illnesses.
Cadw the Welsh Heritage authority believes the earliest part of the Church of St Peris dates from the 14th century but locals believe it to date from the 12th century.
