The Chester Canal (now part of the Shropshire Union Main Line) runs from the River Dee in Chester to Nantwich in Cheshire England. Overall the canal is 19.5 miles long, and has 17 locks. The canal is popular with pleasure boaters giving access from the Shropshire Union Canal to the navigable section of the River Dee, and having convenient town centre moorings near Cow Lane Bridge. The picture shows the canal where it passes through a deep cutting forming a moat alongside the city's Roman walls between Cow Lane Bridge and the Water Tower.
