Red Wharf Bay is a sandy bay that at low tide seems to continue as far as the horizon. The bay stretches from Benllech sands in the east to Llanddona beach in the west. There is fantastic countryside all around Red Wharf Bay but the most family friendly section of the beach is the eastern stretch of sand between the village of Red Wharf Bay and the massive limestone block known as Castell Mawr. Red Wharf Bay is popular for boating and sailing and the ever more popular sport of sea kayaking. Facilities include pubs and restaurants, free parking and toilets. But beware following the sea to the low tide mark as it comes back in pretty quick. (The water in the bay at high tide is relatively shallow which explains the speed of the tide.) The bay is a a designated nature reserve and attracts an abundance of wildlife including sandpipers, oystercatchers, plover, curlew, and dunlin and a short walk onto the sands will reveal why the beach is just so popular with wading birds. Cockles, razor shells and lugworm casts abound on the beach and I found a clam shell as big as ...er..a big clam shell.....
