Originally built in 1870 as a Victorian workhouse, this beautiful mid-Wales hotel is rich in original character and traditional charm, with free Wi-Fi and spacious and elegant en suite rooms.
Set against the dramatic backdrop of Gwastedyn Hill and the Druid's Circle, the Brynafon Country House Hotel is close to the beautiful Elan Valley and within easy reach of the River Wye. The very heart of the busy and historic market town of Rhayader is less than 0.5 miles (0.8 km) away. Gigrin Farm Red Kite Feeding and Rehabilitation Centre is next door.
Family-friendly and pet-friendly, Brynafon has been graded as a 2-star country hotel by Visit Wales, the Welsh tourist board. There are 19 en suite rooms, including four-poster rooms and large, comfortable family rooms.
The hotel has a bar and a charming restaurant, offering superb regional produce, including a local draught beer and whiskey, gin and vodka brewed at the nearby Pendyrn Brewery at Brecon.
The hotel can arrange horse riding, cycling, fly-fishing, clay pigeon shooting and guided walks during your stay. As well as a large car park, with free parking for guests, the hotel also offers a lock-up barn for bicycles.
All of the hotel’s rooms are spacious and most have double beds that can be converted into 2 twin single beds, by prior request.
The rooms are spread across 3 floors, there are 2 rooms on the ground floor that can be used by disabled guests, wheelchair users and those with reduced mobility. Rooms on the first and second floors have good views towards the Elan Valley.
There is plenty to see and do in the area, from cycling, mountain biking, pony trekking, fishing and canoeing to birdwatching and walking. The area is drenched in history and Rhayader itself dates back to the 5th Century.
The region is rich in natural beauty, with the lakes of the Elan Valley to the west, the Brecon Beacons National Park to the south, Nannerth Falls in the north and the green and pleasant lands of Shropshire and Herefordshire to the east. The River Wye gently winds its way through quaint villages and magnificent countryside.
As an important market town, Rhayader is also within easy reach of many towns including Aberystwyth, Abergavenny, Llanidloes, Shrewsbury, Hereford, Hay-on-Wye, and Welshpool.
By Car:
The hotel is just off the A470, which leads from Builth Wells in the South to Machynlleth in the North.
By Train:
The nearest train station is Llandrindod Wells, which is 13 miles (21 km) away. There is also a train station at Caersws, which is just over 20 miles (32 km) away.
By Air:
The hotel is approximately 85 miles (140 km) from Cardiff Airport. The journey from the airport to the hotel should take about 90 minutes.
