Originally a 16th century farmhouse, this friendly country inn is set in its own grounds, overlooking the small town of Blackwood, near Newport, with the Brecon Beacons within easy reach. Monnington Lodge was once owned by the family of the infamous Captain Henry Morgan. Today, this quaint building is brimming with country charm and its own wonderful unique character, giving you a warm sense of welcome from the moment you arrive. Just a short distance from some of the region’s most beautiful woodland, the lodge is nevertheless within easy reach of the cities of Newport, Cardiff and Bristol. There are 15 modern en suite rooms, each with tea/coffee making facilities and satellite TV. Wi-Fi wireless internet access is available throughout. Family run, Monnington Lodge is renowned throughout the local area for its high-quality food, first-class service and relaxed atmosphere.
All of the rooms are tastefully decorated in a simple country style that reflects the hotel’s peaceful, rural location. The latter typically features traditional home-made dishes, such as steak and ale pie; home-baked ham and parsley sauce; lasagne; and battered cod with home-cut chips and mushy peas. The à la carte menu changes monthly to reflect the finest, freshest produce available locally. The menus are varied and cater for all tastes, with everything from traditional English fare to Mediterranean cuisine and dishes from around the world. The comprehensive wine list offers a selection of wines to complement your meal, with over 100 different wines available at any one time. The wine list is constantly updated with wines from around the world. The bar area is the centrepiece of Monnington Lodge and is resplendent in its country inn setting. The bar offers a wide range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, including authentic Welsh beers, as well as Guinness and lager. A range of spirits is also available, including a collection of over 15 different scotch whiskies. Soft drinks and tea and coffee are also available.
There is plenty to see and do in the area surrounding Monnington Lodge and the hotel’s great location makes it an excellent base, however you choose to spend your time. The region is rich on stunning natural beauty, with the awe-inspiring Brecon Beacons and the tranquillity of Cwmcarn Forest within easy reach. The area is also rich in places of historical interest, such as Caerphilly Castle. Cardiff city centre is just half an hour away by road and Bristol is only 40 minutes away.
By Car (from the M4 motorway): - Leave the M4 motorway at junction 32 and head north-west on the A470. - At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto the A468 - Caerphilly Road. - Go through 2 roundabouts. - At the Pwllypant roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto the A469. - Go through 3 roundabouts. - At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto the A472. - At the Crown roundabout, take the 1st exit onto the A4049. - Go through one roundabout. - Turn right onto Bryn Road. - At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit, continuing straight on, on Bryn Road. - Turn right onto Gordon Road, where Monnington Lodge is located. By Car (from Pontypool roundabout) - From the Pontypool roundabout, head south-west towards the A472. - Turn left onto the A467. - At the Celynen roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto the A472. - At the Pentwynmawr roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto the B4251 - At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit. - At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto the A4048. - Turn right at the B4254 - High Street - At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto Gordon Road, where Monnington Lodge is located.
