The Mawddach Trail is a traffic free cycle and walking trail that runs for 9 miles along the south bank of the Mawddach River between Barmouth and Dolgellau in West Wales. The trail takes in some of the finest scenery in Wales and what’s more, considering the topography of the principality it is unusually flat! The fact that the trail runs along the track bed of the redundant Dolgellau to Barmouth Railway explains the lack of gradients on the route. Indeed my wife hadn’t been on a bicycle for 50 years but she managed the 20 mile return trip in an afternoon, albeit suffering from a sore bum for a few days after.
The trail has been designed with accessibility in mind and almost all the sections of the walk are accessible to wheelchair users. There are several gates along the route which are awkward for cyclists but are designed for ease of use for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
