Cefn Coed y Cymmer is situated in the county of Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales. It sits at the confluence of the rivers Taf and Taf Fechan, and the name translates to English as 'wooded ridge at the river confluence'. The town sits to the north west of Merthyr Tydfil and along with Merthyr, Cefn Coed prospered from the Cyfarthfa Ironworks. It suffered badly during the Depression in the 1920s and later with the closing of the ironworks.

Situated nearby are the remains of Morlais Castle. The castle was built by Gilbert de Clare, earl of Gloucester, some time between 1275 and 1287. In 1294 it was captured by Madog ap Llywelyn, but little is known of Morlais from that time onwards. There certainly wasn't as much hassle over the castle as there was with others in Wales!
