Ysbyty Ystwyth
Ysbyty Ystwyth is located some 3 miles, 5km, south of Devil's Bridge in the county of Ceredigion, West Wales. The small village straddles the B4343 road in an area popular for walkers and cyclists. Its name means 'Hospital of Ystwyth' and comes from the fact that the church and parish belonged to the Order of the Knights of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem.
Many believe that the 'ysbyty' (hospital) was a hospice for travellers to Strata Florida abbey, but this was not the case. In olden times Ysbyty Ystwyth used to be a popular place for wrestling. Once a year the chapel would be used to hold wrestling matches, which Lewis Morris noted were watched by “young women and old champions who are to see fair play.” ....
