Pembroke Dock is located in southern Pembrokeshire in South West Wales. It is younger than its neighbour town Pembroke, and properly built up in 1814, when the dockyard was moved here from Milford. Over the decades Pembroke Dock became a hub for shipbuilding. The first steamship man-of-war, The Tartar, was launched in the dockyard in 1834 and in 1847 The Lion was launched, taking the title as the Navy's largest ship at that time. However, the docks also saw devastation too. On 19th August 1940, the German Luftwaffe bombed Pembroke Dock and one of the bombs hit an oil tank, which had been planted in the town a few years earlier. A fire raged for 18 days and is said to be the largest conflagration in Britain since the Great Fire of London. By the 1950s the dockyards had closed and the town struggled with high unemployment. Today, however, Pembroke Dock still remains an interesting place to visit, with a museum and regular ferries to Rosslare in Ireland. The A447 road passes close to the town, travelling to St Clears in the east and Haverfordwest in the north.
