Disserth is a settlement in Powys, Mid Wales. It lies in a loop of the River Ithon on a minor road between Newbridge-on-Wye and the village of Crossways. Disserth consists of the Disserth Caravan and Camping Park, St Cewydd's Church and little else. Indeed there is nowt to see at Disserth unless you are interested in old Welsh churches or you wish to take a caravan holiday.
I am interested in old Welsh churches and, to me, St Cewydd's church is well worth a visit. Although it is a fairly simple structure with nave and chancel and a squat west tower, its importance lies in the fact that it remains untouched by the Victorian architects, who “improved” so many of Wales' and indeed Britain's churches. The absence of 19th Century restoration has left an interesting interior with box pews and decked pulpit of the early 18th Century together with wall paintings and some monuments, and from an earlier age, the font and fragments of the rood screen. The tower is supposedly of c.1400, and of one build, though there is a blocked doorway on the north side; the battlements are thought to have been added within the last two hundred years or so. ....
