Abertridwr is a former mining town located 3 miles north west of Caerphilly, South Wales. It made its name in the coal industry with the opening of Windsor Colliery around 1902. On June 1st of the same year, disaster struck the mine when a platform collapsed and sent nine men into 25 ft of water. Three managed to cling on to floating debris but sadly the other six died.
In 1976 Windsor was connected underground with Nantgarw and from 1979 onwards was used as a ventilation system and an emergency exit. The two colleries were closed on 6th November 1986 and the site is now a housing estate.
