Founded in 1197 by the Norman Lord, William FitzMartin, Newport is a beautiful seaside town situated between Cardigan and Fishguard in South-West Wales. Lying upon the Nevern estuary, Newport attracts many visitors each year for its picturesque views over the sea and also of the area of Carn Ingli and the Preseli hills.
Being a National Coastal Park, Pembrokeshire’s coastal paths include many incredible views of the countryside and the mountains, which is perhaps the main reason why Newport appeals to many walkers and hikers, who visit throughout the year.

Away from the wildlife, the castle of Newport also offers some interesting historical information of the town. Following William FitzMartin, son of Robert Martin, first Norman invader of South West Wales, marrying the daughter of the Lord Rhys and being ejected from Nevern, he decided to build his castle in Newport. The original castle was subsequently destroyed at various times by the Welsh and it is believed that the present castle was rebuilt after three destructions. Although Newport Castle is now in private ownership it can still be appreciated from the area of Carn Ingli. With a mix of both old and new Newport has something to appeal to all members of the family….
