There is an abundance of stone carvings on All Saints
Church Gresford, from animals with weird heads to a variety of
grotesques and demons. As is common to many of the East Wales "Stanley"
churches there is a string course of animals on the external walls.
There is also an interesting collection of head-stops consisting of not
only the usual grotesque figures but also a cross section of medieval
folk, from Kings and Queens to common drunkards. It all leads me to the
conclusion that the late medieval stone masons and indeed Margaret
Beaufort, mother of Henry Tudor (who paid for the works), had a great
sense of humour!
