The Traffic Free Barmouth to Dolgellau Cycle Route runs from the seaside resort of Barmouth on the coast of Cardigan Bay through the Mawddach Valley to the historic town of Dolgellau.
It is a linear route of approximately 9 miles - or an 18 mile return route.
Part of National Route 8, the route is graded as - Easy.
The route is traffic-free but has a very short road section on the promenade at Barmouth.
The route starts at the Car Park on the seafront in Barmouth and finishes at the Car Park on the river bank in Dolgellau.
The Traffic Free Barmouth to Dolgellau Cycle Route links with Lôn Las Cymru (National Cycle Network Route 8) which runs from Holyhead to Cardiff.

The Traffic Free Barmouth to Dolgellau Cycle Route is a fabulous cycle trail from the coast at Barmouth in West Wales. It is an easy ride, suitable for all the family as it follows the level track bed of an old railway line. It is a beautiful trail with phenomenal views of the Mawddach estuary.
Nature lovers will appreciate the flora and fauna along the way with tree lined avenues, salt marshes, reed beds, mud flats and the wide sweep of the Mawddach estuary.
The ride proper starts at the Barmouth Wooden Bridge and finishes (or half-waypoint) at the Marian Mawr Car Park close to the town bridge in Dolgellau. There is no necessity for directions as the way is obvious.
Simply follow the way markers upriver - keep the river on the left hand side on the outward journey and on the right hand side on the return journey. There are a number of information boards alongside the way which give excellent descriptions of the birds and wildlife to be found among the reed beds and on the wetlands and salt-marshes.
If the full 18 mile round trip seems too daunting the shorter alternative to Penmaenpool might be the best choice. This has the advantage of refreshments at the half-way point at the George Pub at Penmaenpool.
