North Wales Cycle Path at Conwy Estuary between Llandudno and Conwy on Llandudno travel guide
Travel Guide for Wales and England >  Cycle Routes in Wales and England >  North Wales Cycle Path at Conwy Estuary between Llandudno and Conwy
The Traffic Free North Wales Cycle Route between West Shore Llandudno and Conwy runs along the banks of the Conwy River. The Cycle Route is approximately 4.25 mile linear route or an 8.5 mile loop route, and is part of National Route 5. The route is traffic free except for a short section from Bodlondeb Conwy to Conwy Marina.

The route starts at West Shore Beach car park on the west side of Llandudno and heads south alongside the banks of the River Conwy on the line of the North Wales Cycle Path.
The shifting sands borne across the estuary from Conwy Morfa have always troubled residents of the West Shore at Llandudno, and the cycle route is no exception, having a few short sections of soft sand. However the beauty of the estuary more than makes up for a bit of heavy going alongside the sand dunes of West Shore.

Llandudno’s West Shore beach is the quietest of Llandudno’s beaches and at low tide there are vast stretches of sandy beaches, but don’t be tempted to leave your bike and stray too far out to the low tide line as the fast flowing waters have been known to entrap people on the sand banks.

This first section skirts the edge of Llandudno Golf Course before reaching Deganwy promenade where the trail is squeezed between the Conwy Valley Railway Line and the River Conwy. Keep your eyes open for the fine Victorian shelter alongside the prom.

Across the river can be seen the Conwy Marina and within a few minutes walking we pass the Quay Hotel and the array of boats at Deganwy Marina.

Until recently (2010) the cycle path diverted away from the river onto the highway at this point, however as of 2011 this section of the route is fully traffic free and now skirts the edge of the Conwy mud flats. There are magnificent views of Conwy Castle, the medieval Walled Town and Conwy Mountain and bird watchers will appreciate being up close to the ducks and wading birds of the Conwy estuary.

As we near Llandudno Junction the route bears right across Conwy Cob toward Conwy, although serious bird watchers might enjoy the diversion further south via a new bridge to the RSPB Conwy Nature Reserve. (ignore the silly sign to dismount).

On crossing the Cob, and the river, bear right below the walls of the Edwardian Conwy Castle to Conwy Quay. The Quay is both a pleasant promenade and a working harbour with fishing boats moored alongside the harbour wall.

At the far end of the quay go through an opening in the town walls and follow the signs to a pleasant path that skirts the west bank of the estuary. The afore mentioned Conwy Marina comes into view, and the Mulberry Pub and Restaurant offers refreshments and a place to rest your legs and enjoy the view of your route.

The North Wales Cycle Route continues from this point toward Penmaenmawr but until the new safe section is opened early in 2012 I couldn’t recommend cyclists to use this dangerous part of the route.

I have listed this path under "wheelchair friendly", which it is for much of the way. However the section at West Shore could be problematical for wheelchairs, pushchairs and prams - and indeed at times for cycles, as the sand from the West Shore beach often covers the pathway.
