Colwyn Bay Beach on Colwyn Bay travel guide
Travel Guide for Wales and England >  Beaches in Wales and England >  Colwyn Bay Beach
If you like your beaches high wide and handsome you will like Colwyn Bay beach. Stretching 3 miles from Rhos Point to Penmaenhead, Colwyn Bay beach offers a variety of pleasures. To the west end of the beach in Rhos-on-Sea is the picturesque Rhos Harbour. The harbour formed by the rock breakwater shelters a mix of private pleasure boats and busy little fishing boats that offer fishing trips out into the Irish Sea. The promenade at Rhos-on-Sea has a great selection of Cafes, coffee bars, seaside Kiosks, and quality restaurants. Frequented by visitors and locals alike they can be busy in the deep mid winter!
Rhos Point is also a favourite with birdwatchers. Sadly the Rhos Harbour Bistro has shut down ..it offered a unique opportunity to enjoy good food and drink while watching the oystercatchers, dunlins, turnstones, cormorants and many more seabirds that are to be found at Rhos Point and on Rhos Harbour rocks. Hopefully the council will have some common sense and include a new cafe in the Rhos Point development plans.

Lets hope they also include the Rhos Point Bait Shop and the Kayak Hire shop, both favourites with tourists and locals alike.

At the heart of Colwyn Bay beach is the ruins of Colwyn Bay Pier. Its worth a visit to check it out before it falls down, there aren't many of these traditional British piers left.

Just east of the pier stands the new waterfront development, or as it is now known, the Porth Eirias Watersports Centre.

Lovely beach and should attract a lot of visitors, but where are the attractions?. No jetty for boats to cater for trips round the bay.Who was the brainbox that decided to remove the jetty by the pier, that would have been ideal. Come on councilers, you have a lot more thinking to do yet.

Colwyn Bay Waterfront Development Phase Two

May 05, 2014 by Bernard Wellings

Spring of 2014 has seen the start of the second phase of the Colwyn Bay Coastal Defence Works - which sees the fantastic new Colwyn Bay Beach doubled in length to almost a mile, stretching from Porth Eirias to the Toad Pub and Restaurant at the Marine Road turnoff. | Access to the beach is limited at the moment but this doesnít stop crowds on the promenade, whether they are just taking a stroll to Rhos-on-Sea or have come especially to watch the dramatic scenes of the huge dredger pumping the sand ashore through the network of steel pipes. | The Al Idrisi deposited the first load just after high tide on Friday 18th April 2014, and the vessel has been working round the clock since. However I paid my daily visit to the prom today (5th May) hoping to get a good shot of the works by the Toad, but although it was high tide the boat stayed anchored way off Rhos Point. | The sand is being pumped ashore through a sunken steel pipeline that has been placed temporarily on the seabed. Approximately 12,500m3 of sand are pumped ashore every day, and I guess that the total amount of sand being pumped ashore between the Pier and the Toad will exceed the 400,000 tonnes pumped ashore between Porth Eirias and the Pier in 2013. | Further promenade regeneration works, between Porth Eirias and the Pier, are also progressing well, and the installation of the sheet piling is now complete, and the foundation concreting works are about to commence. The old seawall (which served its purpose well since its construction in the 1950ís) has been removed and the concrete material has been crushed down to be reused as backfill on the scheme. | All the sand that was pumped ashore in 2013 has been piled up to form 'bunds', or protective walls, to protect the areas they are working from the tide. | However, this is not always successful and indeed, on Monday 28th April the high tide broke through at the eastern end of the works causing havoc on site. I was running along the lower path on the tree-lined embankment opposite, when I was alerted to some loud shouts and general confusion happening over the road. Fortunately no one was injured but the work-site disappeared below the waves and work stopped on the stepped revetment reinforcements for the day. | I videoed the later stages of the water inundation (the Irish Sea rushed in like the waters of the Conwy Falls) but (being on the lower path) I missed the most dramatic shots that were visible from the top path.

New Beach at Colwyn Bay

Apr 17, 2013 by Bernard

We have a fantastic new sandy beach at Colwyn Bay. The stretch of beach from the pier to the new waterfront development, Porth Eirias, offers a wide expanse of sand following a multi million pound scheme to both replenish the beach and protect the coastline. Now all we need is a system to keep the dogs off this stretch of beach (the tide will no longer clean the sands twice a day), and maybe some new wooden breakwaters to prevent the new sand being washed away!
